What romance novels are about.
When it comes right down to it, it’s the honest-to-God emotion that all lead players are after – the nice ones, and even some of the villains as well.
Romance as a genre is after all, about amore, and when you choose a title to read there’s lots of things you expect and sometimes that can lead to monotony. A beautiful heroine who finds love. A handsome man who finds love. That’s nice – but isn’t it just a bit, well, predictable?
What about the heroine who is in the eyes of the world less than perfect? Think Bridget Jones. Think Ugly Betty. For you classic lit and poetry lovers – think Elizabeth Barret Browning. None of them would normally be called a beauty. They are, so let’s get that out of the way, but unfortunately the majority of the population doesn’t see it that quite like that. At first.
And then there are the guys. A very famous film starring Ernest Borgnine called Marty did a great job with this. So did The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Cyrano. None of the men in these works were what you’d call handsome. Or even rich or powerful or for that matter sexy. On the surface, anyway, they were not. But to the lady of his dreams, the man was the hottest Cover-Guy on the planet.
Getting to the core.
That’s what romance readers really want. The ending that’s not supposed to happen. The miracle. That love of a lifetime that makes you once again believe in fairy tales – because that heroine and that hero beat the odds. It gives a person reason to cheer.
What chasing the real thing comes down to is that the leads learn, through many, many trials, that they must first go through hell before they find Heaven. And that their idea of what Heaven means may change along the way, along with their ability to see beneath the facades and dig down to the core of the situation and find out what really exists.
This will reveal what people really are made of, how deep their feelings run and who is telling the truth when they say “I love you.”
