I’m Impressed

Let’s hear about the other guy.

In my last blog post, I talked about  how my fan favorite character, Nora Wells, is in a bit of a quandary.  She fell head over heels for a man who captured her heart in a New York Minute (literally, as it was in NYC), and things got very complicated from there.

Nora’s love interest, Tracy Douglas Allen, turned out to be caught up in a loveless marriage, along with being one of the biggest lady-killers she’d ever met.  No, this was not an easy relationship to have.  Read a bit about them here.

As if the crazy circumstances Nora found herself in weren’t enough, The Wheel Of Fortune turned rather sharply and in a strange direction, bringing the husband she thought was long dead back – very much alive and well.  Read the details about how that came about here.

Oh boy.  Life just went from crazy to insane.

Nora and Richard.  Again.

“I almost can’t believe any of this!” Nora face was flushed and she seemed a bit unsteady on her feet.  Rare for her.

“Mrs. Wells – sit down!” Mr. Ellison, the Pinkerton, spoke sharply.  He was used to having his commands obeyed and it showed.

Nora fell into a large cushioned chair and put a hand to her aching head  “You’re absolutely sure?”  Her green eyes looked sad and shocked yet still shone bright as emeralds.

“I’m not in the habit of making mistakes.  You can take my information to the bank and cash it in for millions.  That’s how valuable it is!”

“Yes, of course.  I believe every word.  It’s just the shock of it all.”  Managing to compose herself again, she went on, “Is he in the area? Do you know if he plans to see me?”

Mr. Ellison rubbed  his several-days-old beard, “I suspect he is planning to see you, but I have not confirmed it.  However, I do believe it’s his intention.  He’s about twenty miles from here on a large ranch he just bought.  At the moment there’s some issues there that are taking up his time.  I would say that you should expect him any time, though.  Within a day or within a week at most.”

“Thank you for you help.  It’s been excellent.  You accomplished far more than I ever thought possible.”

“It’s part of the job, Mrs Wells.  I take pride in my work is all.  If you don’t need me for anything else, I’ll be leaving now . I have other clients to meet, and they are scattered throughout the South,”

Nora extended her hand to him, “I will be in touch if I need any other information Mr. Ellison.”

The Pinkerton tipped his hat politely, turned, and left.

“I miss your beautiful face and long to touch you.”

What now?

The whole story of Richard’s accident and his recovery was incredible.  Almost unreal.  Yet Nora knew it was all true.  The man she married was a strong person, both physically and mentally, and if any man could survive an explosion at a mine, it was him.  Still it was just plain impressive!

A knock at the door two days later brought a young chamber maid into Nora’s suite, bearing a letter.  Once the girl had closed the door behind her, she ripped the letter open like a child on Christmas morning.  She recognized Richard’s elegant, bold handwriting.  If there was any shred of doubt in her mind that he was still alive, it quickly dissolved.

My Nora,

I can only imagine what you must be thinking as you read this!  I was dead, my love, for all intents and purposes.  And a death it was as I have surely seen Hell trying to recover.

I am sorry that the financial matters were confused, you can understand how speechless my lawyer was upon seeing me again, but I assure you that your letter of credit is perfectly good now.  And you have more in your bank account than you did before.  Quite a lot more, my sweetest one.

Regardless of what happens between us, I want you to know that you are and will always be one of the wealthiest women on Earth, and from the looks of my business interests, that will only increase over time.

Is it too late for us, Nora?  Did the years of being widowed change your heart?  Those are the most important questions in my mind now.  Money be damned!  I want my wife!

I will wait for you.  If it takes the rest of your life to decide I will wait for the last few moments we have and they will be so sweet it will be worth waiting for!  Although I have to admit  hope that it does not take that long.  That you find enough love in your heart to be mine again.  I miss your beautiful face and long to touch you.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The address of a ranch I acquired is below.  I’d like it if you wrote back to me.  I’d like it even better if you came to see me here.  It needs improvement but is a fine old house with about twenty thousand acres.  All it needs to shine once again is you.

My heart is yours, Nora.  Always was and will always be.

Nora was for the second time in one week feeling a bit woozy.  She fell back into that big cushioned chair she liked so well, somehow losing a silver earring in the process, and read the letter once again.  Clutching it to her heart, she felt she could scarcely breathe.  Richard did want her still!  And he was willing to wait for her!  No easy task for a man used to getting his own way in quick order.

“Oh  God, ” Nora spoke aloud looking down at the letter, “I’m impressed, Richard.  How could I not be?  That’s a start, my dear man, it certainly is that!”
